When these photos appeared on the Facebook page of Mom2Mom, a breastfeeding support group at Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane, Wash., they sparked a heated debate over whether nursing in uniform is unprofessional — or even shameful.
“I’ve had to pump in tents, in bathrooms, in cars, in closets, in the offices of people who I didn’t know, in rooms without running water,” one Air Force sergeant, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of retribution from her superiors, told The Daily by phone…
But on military blogs, Twitter and breast-feeding Facebook pages yesterday, not everyone was as enthusiastic.
“Tacky, it looks unprofessional and like these airmen are trying to make a political statement,” one reader wrote in the comments section of a story about the photo shoot on the Air Force Times website.
“They should cover up and show some discretion like the professionals the Air Force says we are supposed to be.”
Soldiers Walk
Soldiers Walk
Our stride is soft, our aim held high.
Marking our steps as we march by.
Crisp to the beat of thousand taps.
Lines form to thousands of grateful claps.
Holding our friend on our shoulder.
What can you say if we were bolder?
Plenty of cheers, with a few boos.
Not one flinches, to some who are fools.
Uniforms move as a sea of …red, white and blue.
Our hearts sing to a patriotic tune.
No one says when it will be their turn,
Just Marking our time until we return.
Soft our stride as we step one, two and three.
Plenty of guts to say we are free.
Too tired to weep, too proud of our talk.
Only Free Soldiers can walk the walk.
Fight by land or by sea.
Ready to defend you to be free.
Won’t accept defeat as you see.
Carry me home if I can’t, send me back if I can.
Don’t say you’re sorry, less you are me.
holding a silent salute, please don’t cry.
As our brothers and Sisters March by.
For our last step as this might be.
A soldier’s walk is never free.
Talk about a flare for the dramatic! NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory captured this solar flare on Monday. But don’t worry — it took place on the sun’s northeastern limb and was not directed at Earth.
Got a match?

Afghanistan: Medical Care Suspended in Khost After Attack on MSF Hospital The international medical humanitarian organization MSF today suspended medical activities in its recently opened maternity hospital in Khost Province in eastern Afghanistan, after an explosion inside the hospital compound this morning. Seven people were injured in the blast, including one child.
“The suspension will continue until we receive assurances from the actors controlling the areas that medical activities can take place unhindered, and that the security of patients, medical staff, and health facilities will be respected, as previously agreed,” said Renzo Fricke, country representative for MSF in Afghanistan.
Patients currently under MSF’s care will be referred to the maternity ward in Khost Provincial Hospital. No new patients will be admitted to the MSF facility for the time being.
